It’s Science Fiction Day!

A journey to space! Adventure through time! With science fiction, there is nothing that is impossible to do! And today, January 2nd, is the National Science Fiction Day in the United States! In order to celebrate it, this time we have a list of science fiction books and movies you can read or watch with your kids!

BOOKS

Boy and Bot

Boy and Bot is a good book about friendship and difference. Boy is a human child, while Bot is a robot he met in the woods. However, when Bot gets switched off, Boy tries to deal with it the way he dealt with a sick person; and when Boy fell asleep, Bot tries to deal with it the way it dealt with a robot.

The Little Prince

Many people would argue that The Little Prince is not a science-fiction book, but it actually is with how the Prince travels through planets. However, it might be best if you could accompany your kids as they read this book, because The Little Prince deals with loneliness and the concept of love, so your kids might need a little help to understand it.

Cosmic

Cosmic might be a good book as a start to make your kids interested and participate in the celebration of National Science Fiction Day. It tells the story of Liam, a big kid that is often mistaken as an adult. Then, he finds himself riding a rocket ship flying 200.000 miles off the Earth’s surface.

Zita the Spacegirl

Zita the Spacegirl could be the book that fits for you to celebrate National Science Fiction Day and introduce the wonderful world of science fiction to your kids. It tells the story about Zita, a normal Earthling that is transported to an unknown alien planet. Zita must also rescue her friend and deal with many other problems on the planet.

MOVIES

Wall-E

Wall-E tells the story of WALL-E, a robot that has to clean the garbage left behind by humanity. However, during his 700 years, WALL-E has developed a personality of its own and it starts to feel lonely. While this movie is a good watch to celebrate National Science Fiction Day, it deals with loneliness, so watch this movie together with your kids and help them understand the idea of being lonely.

The Iron Giant

We have talked about The Iron Giant once before. This movie takes place around the time when the Cold War happened, and tells the story of a giant robot that befriends a teenager. However, everyone is scared by the robot because it used to be a weapon.

E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial

E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial is a must-watch for a science fiction fan. It tells the story of a gentle alien stranded on Earth and befriends a young boy. However, E.T. suddenly falls ill, and the government starts intervening.

Big Hero 6

In Big Hero 6, we will join the adventure of Hiro Hamada as he creates and showcases a wondrous invention that could change the whole world. However, the place where he showcases his invention suddenly bursts into flame. What will happen to Hiro?

Those are our movies and books picked for you so you could celebrate National Science Fiction Day! Remember, science fiction is all about the adventure; be it creating a new invention, meeting a new species of living things, or even the journey to space. Live long and prosper!
