Let’s Stop Discrimination With Your Kids

From 2014, the first of March is also known as the Zero Discrimination Day. It is an international event that promotes the idea where everyone that lives in this world is important, and that diversity is not a bad thing. However, we can still find many acts of discrimination around us. Those discrimination will have a bad effect if it continues, that is why it is important for us to stop discrimination that happens around us.

What is Discrimination?

If we want to stop discrimination, it is very important to understand what discrimination really is. According to the Equality Act 2010, what could be considered discrimination is when an institution or person treats other unfairly because of their personal characteristic, such as:

  • Disability
  • Gender
  • Marriage
  • Pregnancy and/or maternity
  • Race
  • Religion and belief
  • Orientation
  • There are 2 different types of discrimination:

Direct discrimination, a type of discrimination that is caused by a direct treatment. This happens when someone acts or treats people in a less favourable way because of the personal characteristics above.

Indirect discrimination, a type of discrimination that is caused by an indirect treatment. An example of this is a job requirement in which it demands a person from a certain race, even though it has nothing to do with the job.

The Effect of Discrimination

It is very important for us to try and stop discrimination that happens near us. That is because discrimination can lead to dangerous and harmful effects to other people, and some of them are:

  • Feeling of sadness
  • Increasing distrust
  • Feeling of isolation and exclusion
  • Depression that might lead to suicidal thoughts
  • Anxiety and fear of being attacked
  • Post-traumatic stress and flashbacks that will disrupts sleep cycle
  • Diminishing self-confidence, worth, and identity
  • Uncontrollable anger
  • Difficulty to concentrate on study or work

Those negative and harmful effects that could happen to the victim of discrimination might not go away for years, or even until they could afford the time and money to go to a therapist for help.

Teaching Children Not to Discriminate

Many discriminations happened in school; this is because usually kids will make fun of something that is different from them. However, if we are going to stop discrimination, that kind of thing should also stop. There are a few things you can do to make your children stop discriminating people that are different from them, and those are:

Be a role model for them

The easiest we can do to make our child participate to stop discrimination is be a good role model for them. We as parents should show them that we should respect others that are different from us.

Expose your child to different people

In this modern day, it is not easy to find a community filled with people of different racial profiles. If you could, it is a good idea to let your children meet those people to know that there are different kinds of people.

Tell them the truth

For some people, discrimination is like an invisible ghost. Many people try to look the other way and act like they are not there. However, if we want to stop discrimination, we need our child to know that they are real. Teach your kids that it is okay for people to be different.
